State and federal law requires that hospitals contact Center for Donation & Transplant (CDT) for all patients who have died or are imminently dying. This referral allows CDT to conduct a comprehensive medical evaluation to determine potential for donation. Please see below for organ & tissue donor referral criteria.
For any patient with medical suitability to donate, CDT will collaborate with the hospital to facilitate a timely and compassionate discussion with the patient's family about the opportunity to donate. Goals of the conversation are to support families by answering questions and providing information about the heroic impact that they and their loved one may have through donation. As part of the donation discussion, CDT encourages families to consider how their loved one would feel if they knew they had the power to save lives and help people in need. Please see below for information on the donation discussion.
CDT is available day & night to meet the needs of you and your hospital. Examples of education include general orientation, simulation and in-depth lectures on donation by topic (ex: organ & tissues, brain death, donor management, etc) and area of specialty (ICU, ER, Respiratory, OR, Pharmacy, etc).
Do you have a colleague, team or other party that deserves special recognition for supporting organ donation & transplant? Submit a nomination and a CDT staff member will respond back to you with ideas on how to honor the individual/team nominee.
